A Permaculture Design Certificate signifies that one has completed a 72 hour design course, a study of the ethics, principles, and design practice of Permaculture. It means the holder of the certificate holds applied permaculture experience and a profound toolbox of permaculture techniques, strategies, solutions, resources, and skills. Our Course Locations: We are thrilled to be offering our course at two inspiring locations The first half of each course will be offered at SnowFarm New England Craft School near Northampton, MA. This is a wonderful opportunity for you to glimpse the crafts that are taught onsite, year-round, such as: welding, glass working, ceramics, woodworking, textiles, etc. These are many of the local artisan and craft skills that are truly needed in our resilient communities! You will also meet and work with the stewards of this historic farm. The second half of each course will be held at Nine Mountain Retreat Center in Plainfield, MA, 'a home for transformation', which is a destination for many visitors throughout the year. Nine Mountain offers retreats in yoga, healing, community, & spirituality, and Nine Mountain are literally next-door-neighbors to world renowned EarthDance, a center that provides workshops in dance, somatic and interdisciplinary arts, with a focus on sustainable living, social justice, and community. We will be designing on the land for Nine Mountain, and the designs that we create during our course will be visited by change makers, artists, activists, healers, chefs, families, etc, throught the year. Our designs for Nine Mountain may inspire numerous visitors well into the future! Teaching Team: Your Lead Course Instructor is Kay Cafasso, Permaculture Designer and Director of Sowing Solutions. Having taught well over 20 PDC's to date, her teaching style is one that is actually based on the permaculture principles and whole systems thinking. Kay has trained (as well as trained other educators) in a method of permaculture education called ‘Teaching Permaculture Creatively.’ The design of this course focuses on whole person learning, catering to all kinds of learners (auditory, visual, kinaesthetic) and brings in many opportunities for student participation, so that each person can take an active and effective role in their learning. The instructors of this course are a stellar combination of practicing professional permaculture designers and educators from leading permaculture design groups in the northeastern USA. Our teaching team includes: Llani Davidson of Broadfork Permaculture Design, Keith Zaltzberg of Regenerative Design Group & Ecological Design Firm and the Conway School of Landscape Design, Walker Korby of the Art of Mentoring, Jono Neiger of the Conway School of Landscape Design and Regenerative Design Group & Ecological Design Firm, and Ryan Harb of Beyond Sustainability Consulting and UMASS Permaculture. Read morea about our teachers and guest speakers on the 'Our Teaching Team' page. Learning Environment: We offer extensive design time and practice, as well as skill shares. In this course you may be: mapping, working with solar light reading tools, sheet mulching, preserving and fermenting food, mixing earth plaster, designing a forest garden guild, making oxygenated compost tea, preparing herbal medicine, tending to a masonry stove or cob oven, etc. During class time we will integrate the methods of storytelling, slide shows, films, discussions, hands-on design activities, etc. In the break times there are yoga classes, meditations, dancing, hiking trails, permaculture movies, and more! Visits to the leading permaculture sites in the Pioneer Valley of Massachusetts are a strong component of this course.
