OAEC’s School Garden Teacher Training supports your school in creating and sustaining garden-based ecological literacy programs and helps you build a strong cohort of colleagues. Our residential training is for individuals or teams of teachers, garden educators, administrators and core parent volunteers.
Through a combination of hands-on sessions and presentations of best practices by experts in the field, we teach participants the basics of organic gardening, permaculture garden design, curricular integration, team building, community organizing and more.
By connecting to Common Core Standards and Next Generation Science Standards with a STREAM focus, we support school teams in integrating the instructional school garden into multiple subject areas using place-based, experiential learning.
Participants gain experience in:
Pedagogical approaches to teaching outside.
Ecological content to infuse into their curriculum.
Organizing skills to support their classes & school community to learn through the living learnscape.
Participants will be inspired to integrate the following content and place-based systems into their schools:
Nutrition: cooking from the garden
Composting and recycling
Medicine from the garden: salves, lotions, soaps & infusions
Farm to School
Through Sonoma State University, participants can receive 3.5 Continuing Education Units or 2 units of Academic Credit. If you wish to receive credits, please bring a separate check or credit card. Current fees are $90 for the CEUs, and $130 for Academic Credits. To receive these units, participants must attend all five days of the session.
